Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Librarymeet the third Tuesday of each month. We provide lunch and an interesting program with visiting writers, scholars, or entertainers.

The McAlester Public Library is proud to serve McAlester and our neighbors in Pittsburg County. Our community members are the most supportive and active library users in all of Oklahoma.

We embrace their enthusiasm and loyalty--this uplifts us to seek even better ways to serve all our patrons. Many of our patrons depend so much on us, and we depend so much on the support and generosity of good and caring individuals. Please know you are always welcome to come and tour our facility, ask questions, or just observe how much McAlester uses its library.

The McAlester Friends of the Library are a big part of making our library as successful as it is today. This group of hard-working individuals provides the library with items that fall outside the normal budget, but yet help make the patron experience as pleasant as possible. Friends have purchased such things as a Wii gaming system for children and teens; a popcorn machine for movie time, plus a 10-foot screen; a rolling cart for patrons with difficulty carrying books; and new tables and chairs for the meeting rooms.

Now the Friends have undertaken an exciting project. They are committed to moving the library to a larger, more convenient, location. The current building is 40 years old and has many problems inherent in a building from 1970; and, it is housing a very different library today.

The Friends group is looking for members to help with this exciting project. This is a chance to get in on the excitement early. Also, monetary donations are always needed. There have already been several generous donations to get things started, but there is a long way to go and as they say, getting there can be half the fun!

If you are interested in volunteering or making a monetary contribution please call Christine Sauro at the McAlester Public Library (918) 426-0930.
